Referrals & Consultations

Phone Consultations

Primary care clinician telephone consultation with child mental health specialists:

  • Provider-to-provider consultation line; not intended for use by parents
  • Monday – Friday, 9am – 5:00pm (except major federal holidays)
  • Calls answered within 30 minutes or less
  • Phones staffed at all times by a team of mental health specialists (Psychiatrist, Clinical Social Worker, or Care Coordinator)
  • Open to any pediatric primary care provider working in or providing care to youth in DC
  • Providers can call about any issue pertaining to mental health of the youth (2-21 years), or their caregiver, regardless of family insurance status
  • Primary care providers can complete a consultation request form to request a specific call back time
  • Calls can also be processed faster once providers are enrolled in DC MAP.
  • Calls will be triaged to the appropriate DC MAP clinician if needed.

Referrals & Resources

  • In most cases, telephone consultation will be sufficient to answer primary care providers’ questions. Moreover, a goal of DC MAP is to link families with needed resources within primary care or the community in as timely a manner as possible.
  • However, in certain circumstances, the DC MAP team may determine that additional, time-limited support from the team is required. Examples of calls that may be eligible for this follow-up include:
  • Help determine level of care, the type of intervention; or if it is unclear what the best course of action would be. (e.g., a child is discharged from inpatient without clear/reasonable plan; child has mental health appointment scheduled but it is unclear whether they need to be seen sooner)
  • Clarify diagnostic uncertainty;
  • Child can be or is being managed in primary care, but would like consultation from someone who has seen the child (e.g., PCP trialed several ADHD meds but wants more input to determine if should make other med changes or if other types of intervention are needed)
  • Family requires more support to connect with services
  • Decisions about appropriate follow up actions will be made by the DC MAP clinical team.
  • PCPs will be provided with relevant information about any DC MAP-family face-to-face meetings within 1 week of the MAP team’s face-to-face contact with the family.

Education & Training

Mental health education and training in primary care

DC MAP provides education and training to primary care clinicians in the form of newsletters, webinars, and other modalities.

We provide education and training on a range of topics pertaining to children’s mental health. This includes training and technical assistance on implementing routine, universal mental health screening.

As of July 1, 2013, DC Medicaid Managed Care Organizations are required to ensure annual mental health screenings by the beneficiaries’ Primary Care Provider, using an approved screening tool. For more information on the currently approved screening tools, please click here.
